SUMMARY:'Salamandrina'\, featuring the art of Gary Chapman
DESCRIPTION:SALAMANDRINA is on display in the Alabama Center for the Arts’ Main Gallery now through February 19.\n \nGary Chapman\, Professor Emeritus of Painting and Drawing at the University of Alabama at Birmingham\, has an extensive career marked by more than 90 solo exhibitions at institutions across the country and numerous group and invitational shows nationally and internationally. A Joan Mitchell CALL Legacy Artist since 2013\, he has received multiple major grants and fellowships\, including a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship and two Individual Artist Fellowships from the Alabama State Council on the Arts. His work has been widely reviewed and featured in over 20 publications\, including four editions of New American Paintings\, and 14 of his paintings are held in the permanent collections of ten southeastern museums as well as many corporate and private collections nationwide.\n\n\nSalamandrina is inspired by Chapman’s late daughter\, Sadie\, who was born with a severe heart defect\, Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome\, requiring surgeries at 9 months and again at age 8. As a young adult\, her heart began to fail\, and she received a heart transplant at 19. In March 2023\, her heart failed again\, and she died of organ failure at age 26.\n\n\nSALAMANDRINA is the first painting where the salamander is used as a symbolic reference to Sadie. Almost every subsequent painting of or about Sadie includes at least one salamander representing the hope of Sadie’s survival in the fire caused by her heart defect\, in anticipation of scientists developing the technology to regenerate organs\, alleviating the need for a heart transplant and the threat of potential rejection.\n\n\nA few years before Sadie was born\, the German industrial band Einsturzende Neu Bauten produced the song Salamandrina\, based on the ancient myth of the salamander. This later took on meaning for the family as metaphor for Sadie.\n\n\nSalamandrina will close on Thursday\, February 19. The Alabama Center for the Arts is open Monday through Thursday from 8:00 am – 8:00 pm and on Friday from 8:00 am – 12:00 pm. This exhibit is free and open to the public.

SUMMARY:'The Art of Dr. Seuss Collection' at Lowe Mill A&E
DESCRIPTION:Lowe Mill ARTS & Entertainment shares The Art of Dr. Seuss Collection featuring known and unknown works from the life of Theodor Seuss Geisel. Artworks will be on display and available for acquisition. \nFor over 60 years\, Dr. Seuss’s illustrations have brought a visual realization to his fantastic and imaginary worlds. His artistic talent went far beyond the printed page and yet\, to this day\, his Secret Art Collection is virtually unknown to the general public. Throughout his lifetime\, Theodor Seuss Geisel (aka Dr. Seuss) created paintings and sculpture\, which he secreted away at the Dr. Seuss Estate. \n  \nAnn Jackson Gallery will share a compelling selection of artworks from The Art of Dr. Seuss Collection at Lowe Mill ARTS & Entertainment\, 2211 Seminole Drive SW\, Huntsville\, AL\, Thursday\, Feb. 12 – Saturday\, Feb. 14. Visitors may explore and acquire works from Dr. Seuss’s best-known children’s books\, as well as The Secret Art of Dr. Seuss\, a mindexpanding collection based on decades of artwork\, which Dr. Seuss created at night for his own personal pleasure. Perhaps the wackiest and most wonderful elements of the collection are Dr. Seuss’s three-dimensional “Unorthodox Taxidermy” sculptures with names such as Carbonic Walrus\, Two-Horned Drouberhannis\, and Goo-Goo-Eyed Tasmanian Wolghast\, to name a few.  \n  \nAdditionally\, Ted’s cat was never far from his artist thoughts. He drew himself as The Cat Behind the Hat\, his cat was the protagonist in several of his Secret Art paintings and\, as a fun aside\, many of his early advertisements and cartoons had a “cat bystander” witnessing all the action. They hinted at his adventures across the world\, his reclusive sensibility despite his fame\, and his penchant for the childlike fantasy and humor\, which infused nearly every facet of his life.  \n  \nDespite the unprecedented demand during his lifetime\, no limited-edition artworks were ever conceived\, authorized\, or created until this historic project began in 1997\, six years after Geisel’s death. That year\, this exclusive project put into motion a series of artworks and exhibitions\, which firmly established him as one of the most iconic artistic talents of the 20th century.  \n  \nEach of these Estate-Authorized limited editions has been adapted and reproduced from Theodor Seuss Geisel’s original drawings\, paintings\, or sculptures. Additionally\, each work bears a posthumously printed or engraved Dr. Seuss signature\, identifying the work as an authorized limited edition commissioned by the Dr. Seuss Estate.  \n  \nIn her preface to the popular coffee table book on this collection\, The Cat Behind the Hat\, Audrey Geisel (Ted Geisel’s widow) writes\, “I’m gratified to carry out Ted’s wishes and have these works revealed to the world.” Join us for a fascinating glimpse into the unique artistic vision of Theodor Seuss Geisel!

SUMMARY:Weekly Movement Arts Community Meetup
DESCRIPTION:Come Flow With Us! \nJoin our local movement arts community for some friendly social practice time in the park! Our community meetups are free\, friendly\, sober and family-friendly spaces for everyone to come and find community through joyful self-expression. \nOur movement arts community encompasses jugglers\, unicyclists\, flow artists\, and fire spinners\, among others. Beginners are very welcome – no experience needed! Most of our members have enough props to share\, so all you need to bring is your willingness to try something new! \nWhat is Flow Arts? \nFlow arts is a general term used to describe the intersection of a variety of movement-based disciplines including dance\, juggling\, fire-spinning\, and object manipulation. The broad category flow arts includes a variety of pursuits that harmonize skill-based techniques with creative expression to achieve a state of present-moment awareness known as ‘flow’. \nCommon forms of flow arts include poi & staff spinning\, hula hoop (or “hooping”)\, juggling\, sphere manipulation (or “contact juggling”)\, and fan dance. New props and expressions are emerging all the time as flow artists cross pollinate with martial arts\, yoga\, circus\, belly dance\, and beyond. \nhttps://flowartsinstitute.com/about-us/what-is-flow-arts/ \n\n
