We will hike up the Oak Park Trail to the Bankhead Trail. We will turn left and hike to the Dallas Branch Trail. We will follow Dallas Branch to Buzzards Roost Trail for a nice overlook and back to the Oak Park Trail. DESCRIPTION:(Easy / Around 1 hour / 1.75 miles) Harvest Square Nature Preserve has a lot of things about it that appeal to the casual hiker: Its trails are relatively easy to walk on\, there’s not a lot of mileage\, and – best of all – there are no hills! Mapping this hike shows it to have a whopping 20 feet of elevation gain over nearly two miles. While the exact route of the hike will be determined by the leader\, participants will see nearly the entire preserve with the exception of part of Senators Trail. SUMMARY:Senior Saunter at Green Mountain Nature Preserve
DESCRIPTION:This month’s outing will explore the scenic Alum Hollow Trailhead at Green Mountain Nature Preserve. Discover the preserve at your own pace; bring a book\, nature journal\, camera\, picnic\, or binoculars! For those who like beautiful waterfalls\, you can saunter to Alum Falls\, which is about one mile from the Trailhead (Please note: The trail is easily navigable with the exception of a steep downhill climb at the end.) \nThe preserve is also home to fascinating history\, including a prehistoric Native American campsite and Alum Cave\, a rock shelter used during the Middle Woodland. You can enjoy looking at flowing streams\, towering pines\, native blueberry plants\, and other unique species that thrive in the area’s acidic soils. \nBe sure to wear sturdy hiking shoes\, bring plenty of water\, a walking stick if you’d like extra support\, and a camera or phone to take pictures! \nSenior Saunter is a Land Trust member-only event. For this hike\, your hike leader will take the group through the “flat” part of the preserve\, exploring the Driskell and Chasco Trails as well as parts of the Terry and Moonshine Trails. As we’re avoiding the hills\, this hike is appropriate for all ages and levels of hikers. If you have a pair of binoculars\, you might want to bring them – this preserve is a birding destination for those who enjoy our feathered friends. \nSign up \nIn the event this hike has to be canceled due to weather\, we will send a notification to the email address you used to register. \nLocation: The Chapman Mountain Nature Preserve\, 1263 U.S Hwy 72 East\, Huntsville\, AL 35811 (Directions: Coming from Huntsville\, cross Chapman Mountain on Hwy 72 and U-turn at Moores Mill Road. SUMMARY:Tree Hugger Book Club Meeting
DESCRIPTION:The Tree Hugger Book club is for nature enthusiasts who like to read.  We will meet at Chapman Mountain Nature Preserve Sunday\, November 15 from 2:00 to 3:30 p.m. to discuss Where the Crawdads Sing by Delia Owens. We will provide discussion questions to guide conversation\, and all are welcome.  Feel free to bring snacks to share.  There will be an optional hike in the woods after the discussion. \nSome info on the book – \nWhere the Crawdads Sing is a 2018 coming-of-age murder mystery novel by American zoologist Delia Owens. The story follows Kya at different points in her life\, from a young girl growing up by herself in a North Carolina swamp to her trial for the murder of a local celebrity.  The theme of ethology\, the study of animal behavior\, Delia Owens’ profession\, runs through the book. \nYou should be able to buy or order the book from Snail on the Wall (our local\, independent book store) or get it from the library (book\, Large Print\, Audiobook\, eAudiobook\, eBook\, or Kindle versions).  Some good sources for buying it secondhand are: thrift stores\, Friends of the Library\, and various online stores. \nLocation: Chapman Mountain Nature Preserve – 1263 U.S Hwy 72 East\, Huntsville\, AL 35811 \nDirections: Coming from Huntsville\, cross Chapman Mountain and u-turn at Moores Mill Road. SUMMARY:Forest Friends at Chapman Mountain
DESCRIPTION:Families with young children (ages 3 to 5 years) are invited to attend these nature discovery events designed to inspire a sense of wonder about the natural world. Through the sharing of stories\, songs\, and art\, each playful exploration engages both adults and children as we make new discoveries about the plants and animals in this beautiful forest habitat. Because we believe that we protect the places that we love\, we hope to inspire young children to feel a friendly\, respectful connection to nature – forming a foundation for curiosity and enjoyment to last a lifetime. Families are welcome to stay after the event to enjoy a picnic from home. \nForest Friends is designed with activities for older toddlers and preschoolers (ages 3 to 5 years) to enjoy\, but younger siblings are welcome! \n\nCost: FREE but membership to support our mission is very much appreciated.\nReservations: Reservations are required. Space is limited. Please register using parent/guardian’s information and reserve one spot per family (not per child). There are no waitlists for these events. If spaces become available\, registration will reopen so please check back if you’re interested in attending.\nAges: 3 – 5 years. An accompanying adult is required for all programs.\nWhat to Bring: Closed toe shoes are required. Come and go at any time between 10:00 and 2:00 for our scheduled activities\, borrow our field guides and binoculars and take them on your own hike\, or work on our self-directed activities with your family.
