SUMMARY:Public talk by Dr. Ayşe Baltacıoğlu-Brammer: “The Politics of Division in the Middle East: '
DESCRIPTION:The UAH Humanities Center and the History Department will host Dr. Ayşe Baltacıoğlu-Brammer (Assistant Professor of History and Middle Eastern and Islamic Studies at New York University) for a lecture based on her forthcoming book\, Boundaries of Belonging:  Sectarianism and Statecraft in the Early Modern Ottoman Empire is forthcoming with Cambridge University Press (December 2025). The talk will take place in Morton Hall Room 145 on Thursday\, Sept 25\, 6:00 pm. \nHer talk examines the politics of sectarianism in the Middle East as a dynamic process shaped by historical contingencies\, shifting power structures\, and strategic political uses of identity and belonging. Moving beyond the idea of timeless Sunni-Shiʿi divisions\, it explores how ruling authorities and political actors have mobilized sectarian language and affiliations to consolidate power\, forge alliances\, and marginalize opponents. By tracing these patterns from the early modern period to the present\, the talk highlights the enduring yet malleable role of sectarianism in regional and global politics. \nGenerously funded by the UAH Humanities Center \n Free and open to the public with a reception to follow. \n  \nMore information online at the UAH Events Calendar page \nhttps://uah.campuslabs.com/engage/event/11453529
