SUMMARY:Nature Play Camp 2026
DESCRIPTION:SOLD OUT: June 8-12 for ages 6-8 | June 15-19 for ages 8-11 \nLet’s go where curiosity leads! Land Trust of North Alabama‘s Nature Play Camp seeks to hone children’s innate curiosity in nature and allow them the freedom to explore. Topics for this week-long day camp at Monte Sano Nature Preserve will include water critters\, fossils\, being nature detectives\, map reading\, animal adaptations\, tracks\, scat\, the magic of trees\, and more! Along with our exploration\, we’ll include puzzles\, crafts\, games\, and lots of splashing in Fagan Creek. \n  \nCamp Details\nCamp Dates and Times: \n**Please note\, hours have changed for 2026.** \n\nJune 8-12 for ages 6-8. Drop off is at 9:00AM\, and pick up is at 3:00PM\nJune 15-19 for ages 8-11. Drop off is at 9:00AM\, and pick up is at 3:00PM\n\nCost: $300 for members\, $375 for non-members \nLocation: Monte Sano Nature Preserve \n\nWeek #1 (Ages 6-8) – Drop-off & Pick-up at Monte Sano Nature Preserve (Bankhead Trailhead) – 2442 Bankhead Pkwy NE\, Huntsville\, AL 35801\nWeek #2 (Ages 8-11) – Drop-off at Monte Sano Nature Preserve (Bankhead Trailhead) – 2442 Bankhead Pkwy NE\, Huntsville\, AL 35801 / Pick-up at Monte Sano Nature Preserve (Cleermont Trailhead) – 506 Cleermont Dr SE\, Huntsville\, AL 35801\n\nAge Groups: Parents of 8-year-olds can choose which group is best for their child\, but a child can only attend one week of camp. Activities will be adapted appropriately for each age group. The second week will include hiking longer distances. \nThe Daily Routine: As we said above\, Land Trust of North Alabama’s Nature Play Camp is designed to allow our campers the opportunity and freedom to spend time exploring nature\, playing with others\, and just being a kid in the woods. There is a structure – group hikes\, lunch\, quiet time\, and a few group activities – but much of the time will be spent with a variety of options. Last year’s campers spent the week building forts\, exploring the creek\, collecting nature treasures for the display table\, and reading or drawing quietly in the shade. Our staff of four adults and two teen volunteers will lead and supervise some activities\, of course\, but a good part of the day will involve choice. It’s a week of being a kid! \nA Few Other Details: \n\nMembers at the Trailblazer (Family) Level and above receive a $75 discount. Check your email for the code. Not a member? Join today!\nThe registration deadline is June 1\, though late registrations may be allowed with prior notice.\nEach camp will host a maximum of 20 campers.\nWe hope to have a limited number of scholarships available. Please contact Angie McCollum for more information.\nQuestions? Contact Angie McCollum\, Education Coordinator\, at angie@landtrustnal.org\n\nThis event is sponsored by Vulcan Materials Company.

Be sure to wear hiking shoes\, bring layers and a snack and water. We will stop along the trail for nature journaling and taking photos\, so bring your favorite art supplies. We may also enter interesting finds into iNaturalist for identification. \nIn the event this hike has to be canceled due to weather or trail conditions\, we will send a notification to the email address you use to register. \nMeeting Location: Hickory Cove\, Trailhead Greenway Parking – 1500 Trailhead Main St\, Huntsville\, AL 35811 \nComing from Huntsville\, head east on Highway 72. At the intersection of Highway 72 and Moores Mill Road\, turn right into the Trailhead community. Then turn right onto Trailhead Main Street. SUMMARY:Senior Saunter at Chapman Mountain Nature Preserve
DESCRIPTION:From the Saunter leader\, Lynne Weninegar:   \n\nThese walks are planned especially for those Land Trust Members who are nature lovers and at least 60 years old (or feel our age) who just want to relax and enjoy a slow pace while experiencing nature at its best.  Please come prepared for nature’s little “distractions – ants\, ticks\, other “bugs”\, and the heat”. You will need insect repellent\, snacks\, closed-toed shoes (preferably hiking boots)\, water\, sunscreen and maybe a walking stick if you need extra confidence! Non-members are welcome for their first hike with us\, but are asked to become members of the Land Trust of North Alabama prior to attending a second hike. We love providing fun for everyone on our Preserves. A membership offers you many other opportunities\, as well as provides the Land Trust the ability to continue preserving land in North Alabama! We look forward to seeing you for this year’s Senior Saunters! \n\nJoin us for a Bioblitz at Chapman Mt. and spend some time at the Bird Blind Feature and the newest birding feature just recently installed at the Preserve. If you have never participated in a Bioblitz\, this is an opportunity to “get your feet wet” and let’s see how many species of “all things living at Chapman” we can locate and document. Be sure your iNaturalist app is installed prior to coming to the event. You will enjoy using iNaturalist! Lynne will assist you if you need help! Lots of birds\, butterflies\, moths\, mammals\, lizards\, frogs\, and yes\, maybe even a snake or two to see at this event! This app is one you will be sure to use when you get back home! If you do not want to Bioblitz\, just enjoy the property! \nSign up \nIn the event this hike has to be canceled due to weather or trail conditions\, we will send a notification to the email address you use to register. \nLocation: The Chapman Mountain Nature Preserve\, 1263 U.S Hwy 72 East\, Huntsville\, AL 35811 (Directions: Coming from Huntsville\, cross Chapman Mountain on Hwy 72 and U-turn at Moores Mill Road. SUMMARY:100 Alabama Miles Challenge Kickoff Hike
DESCRIPTION:Join the Land Trust of North Alabama for 100 Alabama Miles Challenge Kickoff Hike! \nKick-start an active\, healthy lifestyle while exploring Alabama’s natural beauty and connecting with fellow hikers by joining the Land Trust on April 25th at 1:00 at Chapman Mountain Nature Preserve for the event. \nFor this event\, the first 50 hikers will get a t-shirt (limited size availability) and sticker! We will have some brief announcements\, then go for a flat and easy 1 mile hike along the Driskell and Moonshine Trails. At that point\, for hikers who want to get 3 more challenging miles\, we can continue hiking to the Bulldog Trail. \nThe 100 Alabama Miles Challenge encourages all Alabamians to get outside and walk\, run\, hike\, bike\, swim\, paddle\, ride\, or roll with family and friends for 100 miles each year. While people can participate at home\, in their neighborhood\, or at their favorite gym\, the program encourages participants to get their miles in by visiting Alabama’s beautiful parks\, nature preserves\, and rivers. \nSign up here \nIn addition to this SignUp\, please register for the challenge at www.100alabamamiles.org. \nLocation: Chapman Mountain Nature Preserve\, 1263 U.S Hwy 72 East\, Huntsville\, AL 35811 \nDirections: Coming from Huntsville\, cross Chapman Mountain and u-turn at Moores Mill Road. When safe\, get into the merge lane on the right (plenty of time). When the silver guard rail ends\, be ready to turn right onto the paved entrance. Drive through the gate and down the gravel road to the parking area at the bottom of the hill. \nIn the event this hike has to be canceled due to weather or trail conditions\, we will send a notification to the email address you use to register. If the event is canceled\, we will schedule another kick-off hike. We will email participants who have signed up and also create another event on our calendar.
