SUMMARY:**Cancelled** Senior Saunter at Green Mountain Nature Preserve
DESCRIPTION:Due to forecasted weather\, this event has been cancelled.  We hope to publish a rescheduled date soon. \nThis month’s outing will explore the scenic Alum Hollow Trailhead at Green Mountain Nature Preserve. Discover the preserve at your own pace; bring a book\, nature journal\, camera\, picnic\, or binoculars! For those who like beautiful waterfalls\, you can saunter to Alum Falls\, which is about one mile from the Trailhead (Please note: The trail is easily navigable with the exception of a steep downhill climb at the end.) \nThe preserve is also home to fascinating history\, including a prehistoric Native American campsite and Alum Cave\, a rock shelter used during the Middle Woodland. You can enjoy looking at flowing streams\, towering pines\, native blueberry plants\, and other unique species that thrive in the area’s acidic soils. \nBe sure to wear sturdy hiking shoes\, bring plenty of water\, a walking stick if you’d like extra support\, and a camera or phone to take pictures! \nSenior Saunter is a Land Trust member-only event. Not a Land Trust member? No problem! Non-members are welcome to join us for their first Senior Saunter. If you enjoy the experience\, we’d love to have you become a member and continue exploring with us. Learn more at landtrustnal.org/join. \nSign up for this event is closed \nFrom the Saunter leader\, Lynne Weninegar:   \n\nSenior Saunter is designed for Land Trust members aged 60 and older (or anyone who feels young at heart and enjoys a slower pace). These gatherings are an opportunity to connect with nature and one another without the pressure of keeping up with a group hike or reaching a destination.  Some participants enjoy taking a leisurely stroll\, while others prefer birdwatching\, fishing\, reading\, journaling\, photography\, or simply sitting and enjoying the scenery. Senior Saunter is about spending time outdoors\, making new friends\, and experiencing our preserves in a relaxed and welcoming environment. \nFirst-time guests are welcome to join us. We invite returning participants to become Land Trust members and support the conservation of North Alabama’s special places. Please come prepared for the weather and nature’s little distractions. Water\, sunscreen\, insect repellent\, and comfortable shoes are always recommended. We look forward to spending time with you on the preserves! \n\nIn the event this hike has to be canceled due to weather or trail conditions\, we will send a notification to the email address you use to register. \nLocation: Green Mountain Nature Preserve South\, Alum Hollow Trailhead\, 13800 South Shawdee Road\, Huntsville\, AL 35803

SUMMARY:Strange Trails Giveaway Hike
DESCRIPTION:Calling all Lord Huron fans! \nJoin us Thursday\, July 23\, from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. for a themed evening hike at Chapman Mountain Nature Preserve inspired by Lord Huron’s Strange Trails album. As the temperatures begin to cool\, hike leader Megs will guide the group along one of our favorite routes through the preserve for a relaxing summer adventure. \nAs a bonus\, everyone who registers and attends will be entered for a chance to win two tickets to see Lord Huron at The Orion Amphitheater on July 31 and a copy of the band’s Strange Trails vinyl. \nRegistration and attendance is required to enter the giveaway. Registration Link: https://signup.com/go/Jjzyvay \n(Easy / Around 1 hour / 1.5 miles) This hike takes you along some of the more popular trails at our Chapman Mountain Nature Preserve. The trail is relatively easy\, with the first part of the walk on the Driskell Trail around our pine forest and disc golf course\, and the second part through a beautiful hardwood stand on the Chasco Trail. There are very few hills to walk up\, and none of them long or high. This isn’t the strangest of trails\, but it is a really nice walk! \nLocation: Chapman Mountain Nature Preserve – 1263 U.S Hwy 72 East\, Huntsville\, AL 35811 \nDirections: Coming from Huntsville\, cross Chapman Mountain on Hwy 72 (I-565 turns into Hwy 72) and u-turn at Moores Mill Road to go back up the hill. When safe\, get into the merge lane on the right (plenty of time). When the silver guard rail ends\, be ready to turn right onto the paved entrance. (Really! It’s just past the end of the guard rail!) Drive through the gate and down the gravel road to the parking area at the bottom of the hill. \nIf you use a map app to get there\, most people have more luck searching for “Chapman Mountain Nature Preserve” rather than the address. \nIn the event that this hike must be canceled due to weather or trail conditions\, an email will be sent to the address you use to register.

SUMMARY:Senior Saunter at Harvest Square Nature Preserve
DESCRIPTION:From the Saunter leader\, Lynne Weninegar:   \n\nSenior Saunter is designed for Land Trust members aged 60 and older (or anyone who feels young at heart and enjoys a slower pace). \n\nJoin Lynne Weninegar for an early morning saunter along the boardwalks at Harvest Square Nature Preserve. View two naturally stocked man-made ponds\, bring a fishing pole (if you have your fishing license) for a little “catch and release” time\, or just hang out around the pavilion and watch birds and butterflies! Stroll the boardwalks\, watch birds and butterflies\, spend time by the ponds\, try a little catch-and-release fishing (with a valid fishing license)\, or simply relax with a book or journal beneath the pavilion. Participants are welcome to explore at their own pace and choose the activities that interest them most.  Though located in a busy area\, Harvest Square offers a peaceful escape and a chance to slow down\, connect with nature\, and enjoy good company. \nSign up \nIn the event this hike has to be canceled due to weather or trail conditions\, we will send a notification to the email address you use to register. \nLocation: Harvest Square Nature Preserve\, 111 Allyson Sadie Blvd\, Harvest\, AL 35749

SUMMARY:Night Hike: Tuesdays on the Trails: Harvest
DESCRIPTION:We’re starting off our summer Tuesdays on the Trail series with a night hike at Harvest Square! We’ll gather at dusk and hike in the preserve as night falls to discover what creatures we see or hear in the darkness. We’ll use UV lights and learn some techniques scientists use in the dark. Do certain plants or creatures “glow” in the dark? Can you hear our resident beaver slap its tail? Join us on this special nocturnal hike led by naturalist and children’s book author\, Heather Montgomery to answer these questions. \nCost: FREE but only available for Land Trust members at the Trailblazer (Family) level or above. \nReservations: Land Trust members at the Trailblazer (Family) level or above only.
