DESCRIPTION:Families with elementary aged children are invited to attend these homeschool enrichment program events focused on exploring the natural environment to develop a connection to the land\, to wildlife and to each other. We will learn about Alabama’s biodiversity and natural resources through weekly seasonal nature-based themes. \nWe will read literature together to spark curiosity about the natural world\, we will discover and explore our natural environment together through walks and family-led activities\, we will introduce the concept of field journaling as a way to capture our discoveries\, and ultimately we will foster community through interactions in our natural environment. \nAdditional Notes: \n\nPlease dress appropriately and bring your own water/snacks for a short hike.\nParticipants will be provided with a field journal; participants are encouraged to keep the field journal and bring to future events.\nFamilies are invited to bring a picnic lunch to enjoy after the event.\n\nAges: Elementary aged children (ages 5-11) and their caregivers \nLocation: Chapman Mountain Nature Preserve–1263 U.S Hwy 72 East Huntsville\, AL 35811  \n\n\nDirections: Coming from Huntsville\, cross Chapman Mountain and u-turn at Moores Mill Road. SUMMARY:Homeschool Teen Hike: Hickory Cove
DESCRIPTION:(Moderate / about 2 hours / around 2 miles) \nWe will hike Legacy Loop which starts at the City of Huntsville’s Trailhead Greenway near the spring house. The trail leads you up and down the mountain through the forest\, and finishes up further down the greenway. This trail is listed as moderate difficulty due to elevation change and rocky terrain. \nThis hike is for teens\, ages 12–17. A parent or guardian must accompany each teen to the preserve\, and we ask that younger siblings not attend. Parents and guardians don’t have to hike. Be sure to wear hiking shoes\, bring layers and a snack and water. We will stop along the trail for nature journaling and taking photos\, so bring your favorite art supplies. We may also enter interesting finds into iNaturalist for identification. \nIn the event this hike has to be canceled due to weather or trail conditions\, we will send a notification to the email address you use to register. \nMeeting Location: Hickory Cove\, Trailhead Greenway Parking – 1500 Trailhead Main St\, Huntsville\, AL 35811 \nComing from Huntsville\, head east on Highway 72. At the intersection of Highway 72 and Moores Mill Road\, turn right into the Trailhead community.Then turn right onto Trailhead Main Street.
