In this beginner-friendly class\, you’ll learn the fundamentals of shaping and forming as you create five unique garden stakes of your choice. Our instructor will guide you through techniques for building sturdy\, decorative pieces that reflect your personal style.\nAfter the initial class\, your stakes will be fired in the kiln. Two weeks later\, you’ll return for a glazing session to add color and finish your creations before their final firing. All clay and tools will be provided. This is a perfect class for beginners to hand-building with clay or anyone looking to add a handmade touch to their garden\n*There are many variables during the drying and firing process and pieces can crack or even explode. While we make every effort to ensure your work will be a success\, these variables make it impossible to guarantee your work will survive\, but this is the life of a potter.\nInstructor: Paul Wieland has been making wheel-thrown pottery for over 15 years and has taught at multiple pottery studios throughout the region. He studied ceramics under Tom Marsh at the University of Louisville and was a co-founder of the Tennessee Valley Ceramic Arts Guild (TVCAG). He has demonstrated pottery-making at the Burritt Museum Folklife Festival for several years. He has also exhibited his work at Lowe Mill in Huntsville and in Atlanta\, GA. This will be a time for new hikers to learn a bit more about our preserves\, and experienced hikers to share their knowledge. We will have guided hikes and informative tables to share our love and appreciation of hiking on our amazing preserves! \nPlease use the link below to sign up for this event and you will be able to choose your hike the day of the activity. \nGuided Hikes: \n9:30 – 11:30 High Trails \nDescription: (Moderate / Probably a bit more than 2 hours / 3 miles) \nThe “high trails” of the preserve will give us the opportunity to get out and see the upper elevations of the preserve.  We’ll start by heading south from the pavilion on the Moonshine Trail. We’ll take the Whole Planet Trail to the Terry Trail for a walk up the hill. A loop on the Bulldog Trail will bring the group around to catch the Terry Trail back down to the pavilion. \n  \n10:00 – 11:30 Low Trails \nDescription: (Easy-Moderate / Around 1.5 hours / About 2 miles) For this hike\, your leader will take the group through the “flat” part of the preserve\, exploring the Driskell and Chasco Trails as well as parts of the Terry and Moonshine Trails. \nIf you have a pair of binoculars\, you might want to bring them – this preserve is a birding destination for those who enjoy our feathered friends. \nRain Date: April 11\, 2026 \nSign Up
