Job Statement

This position performs a wide variety of unskilled and semi-skilled manual work in landscaping and grounds maintenance, depending on department or section. Employees in this role also assist with property upkeep, construction-related activities, and vehicle stocking to ensure operational readiness and support for Huntsville Utilities crews.

Essential Duties

  • Load, unload, and carry tools, equipment, and materials.

  • Assist in the upkeep and repair of property owned or disturbed by Huntsville Utilities and its crews.

  • Support construction-type activities, such as forming and pouring concrete, building or repairing fences, raking and preparing soil for sod or grass, and replacing damaged trees/shrubs.

  • Place cones in roadways to protect personnel and vehicles; flag traffic as instructed.

  • Stock trucks with water, tools, supplies, and equipment.

  • Clean tools and job sites upon completion of work.

  • Perform all tasks in a safe and responsible manner.

  • Perform additional duties as assigned based on learned skills and abilities.

Education and Credentials

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.

  • Valid driver’s license required.

  • CDL must be obtained within one (1) year of hire date.

Experience and Skills

  • Experience in landscaping, grounds maintenance, or concrete work preferred.

  • Work experience in outdoor environments desirable.

  • Ability to perform physically demanding tasks in all weather conditions.

  • Knowledge and use of common hand tools, landscaping tools, mowers, trucks, and two-way radios.

Working Conditions

Equipment: Trucks, two-way radio, common hand tools, mowers, landscaping tools.
Physical Demands: Mostly outdoor physical work in all weather conditions; lifting and moving items up to 50 lbs.; prolonged standing; manual dexterity.
Other Requirements:

  • Subject to “on-call” and emergency duty.

  • Safety-sensitive position; subject to random drug and alcohol testing.
