Department: Engineering Planning
Job Statement
The Engineering Lead provides technical expertise and guidance in the Engineering Department, handling complex assignments, mentoring junior staff, and ensuring compliance with system specifications. This role evaluates new products, recommends improvements, and serves as a subject matter expert in natural gas design and operations. Work is performed with minimal oversight in a lead engineering capacity, with duties ranging from advanced design functions to staff mentoring. This position may supervise intern employees.
Essential Duties

Provide technical guidance to department staff; review documents for accuracy and applicability.

Mentor less experienced engineers in all facets of natural gas design.

Supervise and/or direct the project work of consultants and contractors.

Prepare feasibility studies, preliminary design reports, cost estimates, and forecasts of system requirements based on growth trends and modeling data.

Review plans and specifications to ensure technical accuracy, completeness, and compliance with policies, procedures, industry standards, and applicable codes.

Perform constructability reviews, identifying deficiencies and making recommendations for corrections.

Review construction shop drawings to verify material compliance with project specifications.

Conduct periodic field visits to confirm use of approved materials and compliance with project plans.

Consult with other departments to address project impacts and resource requirements.

Maintain and update Huntsville Utilities standards and specifications to ensure compliance with industry standards and codes.

Stay abreast of current and proposed industry standards and regulatory requirements, including USDOT and ALPSC compliance; practical knowledge of cathodic protection requirements preferred.
Additional Duties

Prepare and review project budgets, scopes, and justifications.

Perform advanced engineering functions in the design and operation of natural gas distribution and transmission facilities.

Resolve complex customer and technical issues beyond the scope of less experienced staff.

Apply knowledge of gas pipeline, gate station, and regulator equipment design, operation, and maintenance.

Maintain relationships with City, County, and State entities; coordinate with other departments regarding project impacts.

Respond to emergency call-outs and participate in large restoration efforts as needed.

Promote and enforce compliance with all safety practices and policies.

Perform other duties as assigned.
Education and Credentials
-
B.S. degree from an ABET-accredited school in Civil or Mechanical Engineering required.

Current Alabama Professional Engineering License or ability to obtain licensure by comity within six (6) months of hire required.
Experience and Skills
-
Minimum of ten (10) years of progressive practical engineering experience, meeting all requirements for Engineer II.

Strong knowledge of design, construction standards, and codes for natural gas distribution and transmission systems.

Experience with engineering and construction practices, materials, and equipment used in gas system operations and maintenance.

Proficiency in gas system model planning; fluids modeling experience with GasWorks or equivalent desired.

Experience with integrated business, design, and mapping systems required.

Strong communication and mentoring skills with ability to interact positively at all organizational levels.
Working Conditions
Equipment: Vehicle, computer, software (MS Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, AutoCAD, Bentley, Mapping/GIS software, etc.), telephone, and calculator.
Physical Demands: Primarily sedentary office work with occasional field duties; ability to work in inclement weather for extended periods while coordinating storm damage mitigation.
