Position Overview
The Senior Electrical Engineer provides technical leadership and subject matter expertise within the Engineering Department. This role oversees complex assignments, mentors less experienced engineers, ensures compliance with standards and specifications, and contributes to the advancement of Huntsville Utilities’ electric systems. Work will be performed independently in a lead engineering capacity, with opportunities to guide team members, supervise interns, and manage major projects.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide technical guidance, reviewing plans, documents, and designs for accuracy and compliance with Huntsville Utilities standards, NEC, and NESC codes.

  • Conduct feasibility studies, prepare design reports, forecasts, and cost estimates based on modeling and growth data.

  • Perform constructability reviews and recommend solutions for deficiencies in design or maintenance.

  • Prepare and update electric construction standards, drawings, material lists, and cost estimates.

  • Lead projects of broad scope, which may include preparing bid contracts, overseeing line construction, maintenance, and emergency rebuilds.

  • Mentor junior engineers and designers in electric line design and technical practices.

  • Stay current on industry trends, evaluating new products and recommending system improvements.

  • Collaborate with City, County, and State entities, and coordinate with internal departments to manage project impacts and resources.

  • Respond to emergency call-outs, managing restoration priorities and actions.

  • Promote and enforce Huntsville Utilities’ safety standards.

Qualifications

  • Education/Certification: Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from an ABET-accredited program. Current Alabama Professional Engineer (PE) license required, or the ability to obtain licensure by comity within six months of hire.

  • Experience: Minimum 10 years of progressive experience with:

    • 12–25 kV distribution and 46/115/138/161 kV transmission systems.

    • NESC compliance and modeling software (Synergi, ETAP, or equivalent).

    • Line design, construction standards, distribution and transmission codes.

    • System performance analysis and recommending improvements.

    • Materials, equipment, and integrated business/design/mapping systems.

  • Skills: Strong technical knowledge, mentoring ability, project leadership, and effective interpersonal and communication skills.

Additional Requirements

  • Equipment: Computer/software (MS Office, AutoCAD, NiSC, Bentley, GIS), vehicle, two-way radio, and standard engineering tools.

  • Physical Demands: Primarily office-based with occasional field work in inclement weather, including extended storm restoration coordination.

  • Other: Must hold a valid Alabama driver’s license. Subject to recall, on-call duty, and random drug/alcohol testing as a safety-sensitive employee.
