Job Summary

The Water Plant Operator II is a skilled technical role responsible for operating and maintaining a drinking water treatment plant to meet distribution system demands. The position ensures regulatory compliance and the delivery of safe, high-quality potable water while performing analytical and process-related work.


Essential Duties

  • Maintain regulatory compliance with all applicable ADEM, EPA, and other regulatory standards.

  • Operate and monitor plant systems to deliver adequate, safe, and quality potable water, working independently during after-hours, weekends, and holidays.

  • Monitor and control SCADA and telemetry systems to manage reservoir valves, wells, and booster pumps.

  • Notify supervisors immediately of water quality issues or equipment malfunctions.

  • Adjust operational parameters based on laboratory analysis of raw and finished water.

  • Operate and regulate chemical feeders and other plant equipment to ensure optimum treatment efficiency.

  • Perform basic maintenance and troubleshooting of plant equipment.

  • Review and ensure accuracy of all written and electronic log entries, records, and reports.

  • Conduct plant inspections and report security issues or equipment malfunctions.


Additional Duties

  • Perform equipment washdowns and general cleaning tasks.

  • Respond to routine customer inquiries or route them to appropriate personnel.

  • Assume responsibilities until a relief certified operator arrives and is briefed.

  • Assist in training programs to ensure personnel are properly trained, equipped, and motivated.

  • Monitor changes in water quality regulations and treatment techniques at the local, state, and federal levels.

  • Maintain continuing education hours in compliance with ADEM Division 10 to remain certified.

  • Perform additional duties as assigned.


Job Requirements

Education/Certifications/Training

  • High school diploma or GED required.

  • Associates degree or coursework in chemistry, math, hydraulics, or computers highly preferred.

  • ADEM Grade IV Water Treatment Operator Certification required or must be obtainable via reciprocity within six (6) months.

  • Candidates who have passed the ADEM Grade IV exam but lack required experience may be considered.

Experience

  • Minimum 2 years of experience in a Grade IV water treatment plant.

  • Knowledge of water quality standards, treatment techniques, plant operations, and ADEM Division 7 and 10 regulations.

  • Ability to operate pumps, chemical feeders, motors, controllers, and other process equipment/instrumentation.

Equipment

  • Trucks, computers, chemical feeders, pumps, laboratory equipment, electrical controls, and motor starters.

Physical Demands & Environmental Conditions

  • Visual and manual dexterity, including the ability to distinguish colors.

  • Ability to climb ladders and steps.

  • Exposure to outdoor weather conditions and lifting items up to 50 lbs.

Other

  • Shift work required.

  • Subject to on-call and emergency duty.

  • Safe handling of hazardous chemicals.

  • Must maintain a valid driver’s license.

  • Safety-sensitive position subject to random drug and alcohol testing.

  • WORK KEYS test required unless already certified at ADEM Grade IV.
