$15 million Modaus Road Sportsplex redesign project in Decatur advances
Reading time: 2 minutes

The long-awaited Modaus Road Sportsplex redesign is moving right along.
For the past 2 years, residents have been awaiting the arrival of the brand-new Sportsplex in Decatur—and after a development hiatus beginning in September 2024, things are finally starting to move along.
The delay came as a result of a budget reassessment. An $18 million investment was originally projected, with city leaders quickly determining that the numbers needed to be rectified.
Several options for proceeding were presented, but Option B (a $15.1 million investment) was approved by Decatur City officials earlier this month.
What the Sportsplex will bring

The additions to the Sportsplex will be extremely beneficial to the community, providing a space for sports, recreation and community connection. Check out the proposed additions below:
- Eight softball and baseball fields
- Two multi-purpose fields
- One main restroom and concession facility
- Reduced concrete footprint
- Modified shade structures
- Consolidated batting cages
- Removal of decorative steel fencing
- An optional $650,000 add-alternate for an additional restroom facility
This announcement is especially exciting as it is a step in the right direction for the future of recreation in Decatur:
“This project has taken a longer road than any of us expected, but the goal has never changed.
We owe it to our residents to finish this Sportsplex the right way and deliver a facility our families can enjoy and be proud of for years to come. This vote shows we are united in moving forward.”
Mayor Kent Lawrence
You can find the Sportsplex at 2616 Modaus Rd SW, Decatur, AL 35603.
