The Huntsville Spacewalk Trail has existed since the 60s, but it hasn’t always been in use.

The original trail was established by a local Boy Scout group, but a large portion of the trail was developed into commercial property, rendering it largely inaccessible.

In the years following, efforts were put in motion to bring back the trail, but ultimately did not come to fruition — that is, until recently.

Eagle Scout Lana Lien’s project aimed to restore and lengthen the trail, and the project has neared completion. Thanks to efforts from Lien’s Eagle Scout troop, Burritt on the Mountain, and the Land Trust of North Alabama, the trail is nearly ready for hikers to enjoy.

The trail spans a 16.5 mile loop on Monte Sano, offering a unique hiking experience for advanced hikers. Some portions of this trail are said to be particularly challenging!

A ceremonial “stick cutting” ceremony will take place at the South Monte Sano Trailhead on Friday, April 3 at 10AM.
