$17 million Student Union building at Calhoun Community College + more new building permits

Of the 17 new building permits issued this past week throughout the state for construction projects exceeding $1 million, five are for projects in the Huntsville area.

The largest project approved this past week is at Calhoun Community College in Decatur, where a new Student Union building is now under construction.

Ground was broken for the new building last fall. The new building will be a two-story, 29,800-square-foot facility designed to bring students together for social activities, dining, academic pursuits and community engagement.

Here’s more info on the new building:

  • The first floor, encompassing 17,475 square feet, houses the more active spaces such as a social seating lobby, reception area, coffee shop, bookstore and multifunctional student commons.
  • The second floor, totaling 12,330 square feet, features more focused areas including a library, independent study pods, a computer training area, staff offices and a flexible meeting room.
  • The new building was designed as a multifunctional hub for social activities, dining and learning.
  • The facility houses areas for community activities and group meetings, as well as zones for relaxation and quiet study.
  • The commercial kitchen is the first of its kind on campus, providing expanded dining options and potential opportunities for future culinary programs.
  • Outdoor areas were also designed to support the user experience by providing options for individual and group gatherings.

The $17 million building permit was issued to Lee Builders. The building is expected to be completed in spring of 2027.
