2 public meetings being held to discuss University Drive traffic study—community feedback wanted

Since the summer of 2024, the city of Huntsville has been conducting a Transit Oriented Development (TOD) Planning Study on University Drive in an effort to see how to best enhance public transportation on the road.

They are hosting two public meetings in August to discuss recent findings of the study, as well as give the community an opportunity to voice their feedback.

First meeting details:

Topic: Northwoods community + surrounding area
Where: Cavalry Hill Community Center Room
When: 6-8PM on Tuesday, August 11

Second meeting details:

Topic: Entire study area, including the Northwoods area
Where: Room 621 of the Huntsville City Hall
When: 6-8PM on Wednesday, August 12

Where, what + why: University Drive traffic study

Transit Oriented Developments are an approach to urban planning that combines quality public transportation with conditions that support walking and cycling, with the end goal of bringing people together and making services more accessible.

Another acronym to become familiar with is BRT, or Bus Rapid Transit. This is a method of high-capacity transit commonly seen in large cities.

The University-Medical corridor was selected based upon two criteria: an already high level of public transportation use, and the high density of population/jobs along the route.

After the implementation of a BRT system, buses will run more frequently (service every 15 minutes), have distinct branding and stations will have more amenities, such as seating and boarding platforms.
