I am somewhat of a burger enthusiast, so to speak. While I do make a good burger at home, there are several places here in town that cook up some fabulous burgers with some interesting and unique variety.

While a “best of” list would be nearly impossible to put together, I wanted to list some of my favorite burger joints here in the Huntsville area. And I would be interested in knowing what you think.

Back Forty Beer Co.

Not only does Back Forty serve some tasty craft beer, but their burger is amazing. Not too fancy, they use American cheese, lettuce and tomato, but they also top it off with a delicious aioli.

Bad Daddy’s Burger Bar

While I have not tried every burger on Bad Daddy’s menu, I do know that every one of them I have tried is superb. With two locations in the Huntsville area, these folks have mastered the art of burger-making.

Beast Mode Food Truck

A former intern here at Hville Blast, Cooper Smitherman, recommended this food truck to me and told me to try the Cuban burger, since I mentioned being a fan of both burgers and a good Cuban sandwich. This burger combines an Angus patty with smoked ham and pulled pork, and is my favorite out of a menu of really good burgers.

Big Spring Cafe

You simply cannot talk about burgers in the Rocket City and leave Big Spring Cafe out of the discussion. The famous “Home of the Greasy Burger” is just that: home to a delicious, diner-style greasy burger.

There is nothing fancy about their burger. It’s simply delicious.

Blue Plate Cafe

This is another Huntsville icon, and their big blue sign has become a landmark of its own. True to the classic diner menu, this place has a perfect standard cheeseburger. Sometimes, that’s all you need.

Bubby’s Diner

If you want some sweetness to your burger, Bubby’s is home of The Bubby, made with a glazed doughnut, sliced in half, grilled and used as a burger bun. And that’s a good one, for sure. But my favorite on the menu is Charlly’s Pimento Cheese Burger.

Cheeseburger Bobby’s

This menu includes everything from classic burgers to some more unique takes. These are diner-style burgers that are all delicious. But I will admit that my favorite is not really a “hamburger,” per se. Try the turkey burger. Trust me.

City Cafe Diner

An old staple in Huntsville, City Cafe Diner serves a wonderful breakfast, as many folks already know. But don’t forget to try their burgers. My two favorites are the Texas Hold’em Burger and Sophia’s Turkey Burger.

Cricket’s

Although I went here to try the wings (which they are justly known for), I returned to try a burger, and the mushroom burger is absolutely amazing.

Dallas Mill Deli

My late father-in-law, Mike May, used to eat this burger probably twice a week. So when I moved here, I followed suit. This is a no-frills, classic burger with all the traditional trimmings.

Farm Burger

Farm Burger, in the Whole Foods shopping center on Bob Wallace, has multiple choices for burgers on its menu. My favorite is the Sunny-Side, which includes grassfed beef, pasture-raised bacon, pepperjack cheese, sunny-side up egg and salsa verde on a sesame seed bun.

Goodland Pour House

This place has a wonderful atmosphere and excellent service, and while you can get some delicious Detroit-style pizza here, I really enjoyed their burgers the most. So far, I have tried their mushroom burger (Fungus Among Us) and the Alamo Basement Burger.

Jack Brown’s Beer & Burger Joint

Burgers are Jack Brown’s specialty, of course. And they have a wide array of takes on the traditional burger. I’m a fan of the Greg Brady, which is a burger topped with mac & cheese, American cheese and Martin’s BBQ potato chips.

Melt

I am a fan of all the sandwiches on Melt’s menu, but as a burger fan, they do serve up a pretty darn good cheeseburger. Instead of a bun, Melt uses Texas toast, similar to a patty melt (incidentally, Melt also has one of those on the menu). The Matilda sauce makes this burger unique.

Old Black Bear Brewing

Not only will you have some tasty craft beer at Old Black Bear, but you’ll also find a fantastic burger. (Hville Blast)

Old Black Bear Brewing has fabulous craft beer, but this place also has some of the best burgers in town. My colleague here at Hville Blast, Lacey Muenstermann, recommended to me the 256 Burger (cheddar, pork belly, pickles, crispy onion straws and 256 Extra Pale Ale white sauce served on a pretzel bun). She didn’t steer me wrong.

Peppered Pig

I loved these burgers when Peppered Pig was operating as a food truck. And still love them at their restaurant on Four Mile Post Road. You’ll find some really unique burgers, so don’t be afraid to experiment. I like the Piggy Burger (bacon, smoked pulled pork, sweet BBQ sauce, pickled cabbage slaw and Colby cheese).

Salt Smokehouse

The K-Pop Burger from Salt Smokehouse is addictive. (Hville Blast)

Salt Smokehouse at Lincoln Mill has plenty of good stuff on its menu, but the K-Pop Burger is probably my favorite. This delicious burger features smoked jalapeño bacon, a fried egg, American cheese, red onion, serranos peppers, lettuce, BBQ sauce and white sauce on a potato bun.

Shaggy’s Burgers and Tacos

One of my go-to Huntsville spots, Shaggy’s is a great fast-casual place when you can’t decide between burgers or tacos. I’ve never met a menu item there that I didn’t like. But maybe my favorite is (true to the restaurant’s name) the Taco Burger.

Straight to Ale

Something a lot of breweries here in town have in common is that they also serve some tasty burgers. Ale’s Kitchen at Straight to Ale has a nice selection of burgers on its menu, and I am partial to the sliders.

West End Grill

West End Grill lets you basically build your own burger. You can choose from a bevy of toppings (I chose bacon, mushrooms and Swiss cheese) and enjoy it in a cool, welcoming atmosphere.
