Huntsville is the site of one of the music industry’s major conferences over the next two days, as leaders in the industry have flocked to the Rocket City for the 12th annual Music Cities Convention.

The global convention, held at the Von Braun Center this year, explores music’s role in the cultural infrastructure of communities.

The 2023 Music Cities Convention features educational panels and roundtable discussions with experts who will share insights on how music impacts a city’s growth.

Several City of Huntsville representatives will also participate, including Mayor Tommy Battle, music officer Matt Mandrella, Urban and Economic Development director Shane Davis and director of the Office of Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Kenny Anderson.

The convention includes an array of influential speakers and also includes tours for the participants of local music venues, showing off what Huntsville has to offer as a music city destination.

Topics for discussion at this year’s conference include:

  • Global music city policies
  • Music & economic development
  • Music and technology

The theme of this year’s convention is “How Music Drives Social & Economic Growth In Cities: Creating The Most Ideal, Equitable And Prosperous City In The World Using Music And Culture.”

This is pertinent to Huntsville since the city’s tourism numbers have increased with the increase in music events — spearheaded by the opening of the Orion Amphitheater.

“We are seeing significant increases in the number of hotel rooms used countywide, which can be partially attributed to concerts, performances and music events.”

Charles Winters, Executive Vice President of the Huntsville/Madison County Convention & Visitors’ Bureau
