2026 high school basketball awards include some amazing local players

The Alabama Sports Writers Association announced their 2026 high school basketball honors this week, and six local hoops stars were among those honored.

Here are the local high school players honored by the ASWA
The ASWA named their Player of the Year recipients this week for each high school classification in girls and boys basketball.
Local athletes who received Player of the Year honors include:
- Evan Toms (Huntsville High School): 7A boys Player of the Year
- Kristen Johnson (Hazel Green High School): 6A girls Player of the Year
- Sawyer Kate Hulgan (Plainview High School): 4A girls Player of the Year
- Belle Hill (Mars Hill Bible School): 3A girls Player of the Year
- Khalil Luster (Red Bay High School): 2A boys Player of the Year
- Makinley Traylor (Ider High School): 1A girls Player of the Year
Toms, Hulgan and Hill were all named to the ASWA Super All State Team.
All six of these North Alabama basketball stars were in the running for Alabama’s Mr. and Ms. Basketball titles, although those honors went to Oxford High School senior Jaylen Alexander and Hoover High School senior Khloe Ford, respectively.
