Believe it or not, high school football teams around the state are just weeks away from starting spring practice, and multiple local schools will have new coaches on the sidelines this year.

Navendra Woods will take over as head coach of the Lee High School football team. (Huntsville City Schools)

Woods brings a strong background in leadership, coaching experience and firsthand knowledge of the game at both the high school and collegiate levels.

Most recently, he served as defensive coordinator and linebackers coach at Huntsville High School from 2022–2026. Prior to that role, Woods worked for Gadsden City High School as special teams coordinator and linebackers coach from 2019–2022 after a stint as head coach at Coosa Christian School in Gadsden from 2016–2018.

Scott Peavey: New Hope High School

Before coming to New Hope, Peavey coached at Etowah High School for two seasons. Before that, he made coaching stops at:

  • Wellborn High School
  • Ashville High School
  • Villa Rica (Georgia) High School
  • Oxford High School
  • Haralson County (Georgia) High School
  • Madison County High School

While at Madison County, Peavey became the school’s all-time leader in wins, and produced 18 All-State players.

Seth Parker: Bob Jones High School

Parker is far from a “new face” at Bob Jones, as he is an alumnus of the school and was an assistance coach for the Patriots before serving as head coach at Priceville High School for two seasons.

Parker took a 2-8 Priceville team and made them a playoff team, advancing to the second round in just his second year with the program.

Juwan Simpson: Hazel Green High School

If Juwan Simpson’s name sounds familiar in this part of the country, it’s likely because he was a standout linebacker at the University of Alabama.

Simpson, a Decatur native, played six seasons in the Canadian Football League (winning two Grey Cup titles, a CFL All-Star honor and the Norm Fieldgate Trophy for best defensive player) before coaching in the CFL for two seasons with the Calgary Stampeders.

Simpson was hired in December as the new Hazel Green coach after serving as assistant at Austin High School, James Clemens High School and Westminster Christian Academy.
