$45M Sparkman Intermediate School now ready for the school year

Just in time for the start of the 2026-27 school year, the Madison County School System celebrated the opening of Sparkman Intermediate School last week, the first new school in the system since 2014.

The school will serve more than 800 students and has the capacity for 1,200 students.

The rapid population growth in Madison County has presented the Madison County School System with a school overcrowding problem, which necessitated this new school, and another school in the system opening next year.

The $45 million Sparkman Intermediate School serves students in grades 4-6 and includes:

• 44 classrooms
• Four designated special needs classrooms
• Art lab
• Band room
• Two extended learning areas

More growth in MCSS

The system will open another new school to begin the 2027-28 school year, when construction of Hazel Green Middle School is completed.

Here’s what to know:

• It will serve all 7th and 8th grade students zoned for Hazel Green High School.
• It will accommodate up to 1,200 students.
• The school will have its own athletic fields, gymnasium and administrative offices.
• It is scheduled to open for the 2027-28 school year.

Meridianville Middle School will transition to an intermediate school for 5th and 6th grade students.
