4th of July: what's open + closed in Huntsville

Independence Day is this weekend, and this year it falls on a Saturday. That means some businesses and most government services will likely observe the holiday on Friday, July 3, while some services will close on the 4th of July only.

This might be a little confusing, so let’s clear that up.

Federal, state + municipal services on the 4th of July

Here’s an update on federal, state and local facilities and services this weekend:

Federal offices

USPS: Regular mail delivery and post office hours will operate normally Friday, July 3, no mail delivery Saturday, July 4.
Federal Courthouse: Closed July 3-5
Financial markets: Closed July 3

State of Alabama

State of Alabama Offices: All state-level government offices and departments are officially closed July 3.
Alabama Courts: State and local courts are closed July 3.

Madison County

Madison County Courthouse: Closed July 3-5, opening July 6
Huntsville-Madison County Libraries: Open regular hours July 3, closed July 4
Madison County Sheriff’s Office: Administrative offices closed July 3

City of Huntsville

Huntsville City Hall: Closed July 3-5, opening Monday, July 6
Huntsville Animal Services: Closed July 3-5, opening Monday, July 6
Huntsville Municipal Court: Closed July 3-5, opening Monday, July 6
Huntsville Transit: Open Friday, July 3, closed Saturday, July 4
Residential garbage collection: On regular schedule July 3
Police + fire: Essential police and fire personnel will remain on duty throughout the holiday.
Parks & Recreation: Get-A-Way Skate Park and Kids’ Space, Dr. Richard Showers, Sr. Splash Pad, Bicentennial Park Splash Pad and the Everybody Can Play Splash Pad will be open during their usual hours.

City of Madison

Madison City Hall: Closed July 3-5, opening July 6
Trash pickup: On regular schedule Friday, July 3
Madison municipal offices: Closed July 3-5
Police + fire: Essential police and fire personnel will remain on duty throughout the holiday.

City of Athens

Athens City Hall: Closed July 3-5, opening July 6
Trash pickup: On normal schedule all week, residents are asked to have bins at the curb by 6AM
Police + fire: Essential police and fire personnel will remain on duty throughout the holiday.
Limestone County Courthouse: Closed July 3-5, opening July 6

City of Decatur

Decatur City Hall: Closed July 3-5, opening July 6
Police + fire: Essential police and fire personnel will remain on duty throughout the holiday.
Trash pickup: No trash collection July 3. All trash pickup scheduled for July 3 is moved to July 6

What about businesses in and around town?

Banks will be open Friday, July 3, but will be closed Saturday, July 4. These businesses are open July 3, but some will be closed on July 4 or will operate on a holiday schedule:

Academy Sports + Outdoors: Open regular hours
Aldi: Closes at 4PM
Bass Pro Shop: Open 9AM-7PM
Best Buy: Open regular hours
BJ’s Wholesale: Open regular hours
Costco: Closed
CVS: Most stores will be open regular hours. Pharmacy hours may vary by location.
Dick’s Sporting Goods: Closes at 7PM
Dillard’s: Open 11AM to 6PM
Home Depot: Open regular hours
Huntsville Botanical Garden: Open regular hours
Kohl’s: Open regular hours
