5 hiking excursions to take this summer in the Huntsville area

The Huntsville area has several cool hiking trails, and with the Land Trust of North Alabama hosting a series of guided hikes through some of their nature preserves, you are sure to find some fun hiking opportunities this summer.

Guided Hike @ Green Mountain South: June 6

  • What: This hike, along Green Mountain’s Alum Hollow Trail, will take hikers to Alum Falls and the rock shelter nearby, two scenic spots on the preserve. The overhang served as a shelter for native residents and travelers over this area’s human history. The trail is relatively easy, with the exception of a steep hill leading down to the waterfall and shelter at the half-way point.

Hump Day Hike @ Monte Sano: June 10

  • What: This is a somewhat difficult hike at the Monte Sano Nature Preserve starting at the Bankhead trailhead. The hike will start on the new Toll Gate Trail Greenway and last about three miles.

Hike @ Bradford Creek Greenway: June 14

  • What: For the leisurely hike, this greenway is paved and wide, so this is the perfect walk for strollers or young hikers. We’ll take a nice slow pace and see what the creekside has to offer.

Guided Hike @ Hickory Cove: June 27

  • What: Hikers will walk this preserve’s primary trail, the Legacy Loop. Covering much of the preserve, this hike will show you some of the beauty this hillside has to offer.
