5 of the best spots to enjoy an IPA
India Pale Ales (IPAs) are a popular drink at taprooms, and to celebrate National IPA Day (which occurs during the first Thursday in August) I’m giving a guide to where you can find the best IPAs in Huntsville.
Table of Contents
What are IPAs?
IPAs are distinguished from other beers mostly for their extra hops and the fact that it’s a pale ale. The taste is characterized by a signature bitterness and strong flavor.
This beer was first created in the early 1700s when British sailors added extra hops in order to keep their beers fresh on the voyage from Britain to India.
Not only was it a means to an end, but the sailors enjoyed the stronger flavor and signature bitterness of the particular drink and so it became a popular style.
Enough with the boring stuff. Here’s where you can find the best IPAs in Huntsville.
The lineup
Back Forty
Back Forty is a newer but strong contender in the Huntsville brewery scene. They’re known around town for their great food and even better beer.

The Nook
I love the Nook’s cozy environment great for casual meetups. They advertise having 500 beers on tap, multiple of which are IPAs. In addition to their small but enjoyable food menu, they surely have something for everyone.

Old Black Bear
Old Black Bear is another strong contender equally known for their food. You’ll find an excellent variety of beers here including but not limited to IPAs.

Straight to Ale
When I think of Straight to Ale, I think of it as the first large brewery that opened in Huntsville proper. Not only is their beer and food good, its location is awesome for weekend activities with concerts, food, games and more.
- Where: 2610 Clinton Ave NW, Huntsville, AL 35805
- When: Sunday: 11AM – 8PM; Monday – Thursday: 11AM – 10PM; Friday – Saturday: 11AM – 11PM
Yellowhammer
Literally right next to Straight to Ale is Huntsville’s other large brewery. Yellowhammer has built their brand for its enjoyable social environment, outdoor fun and awesome beers. I recommend trying the Groovy Don IPA to celebrate National IPA Day.

- When: Sunday: 11AM – 8PM; Monday – Thursday: 11AM – 9PM; Friday – Saturday: 11AM – 11PM
Closing
If you’ve had or never had IPAs before, use this day as an excuse for knocking one back. Whether you try a tasting flight to find your favorite flavor or go with a safe, classic favorite, visit your favorite brewery and get a recommendation.
