Holy Week is upon us, which of course means that Easter is this Sunday. This is a special time of year for those who celebrate Easter and in Huntsville there are several special Easter services to attend throughout the area this week.

One of the special Easter services you can attend is the Tenebrae, a historical Catholic liturgy of Holy Week with readings, prayers and chants or hymns. Tenebrae traditionally uses a display of fifteen candles that are gradually extinguished as the service progresses. At the end of the service, the last candle is put out and the Church or Chapel is left in darkness – symbolizing the death of Christ.

The Great Vigil of Easter at Church of the Nativity
The Great Vigil of Easter is one of the oldest liturgies of the church, and is intended to be the first and primary service of the Easter Celebration. Join Church of the Nativity Saturday night in this special tradition.

Sunrise Service at Monte Sano State Park
Are you looking for truly special Easter services? What better way to celebrate the Resurrection of Christ than to attend a beautiful sunrise service on Easter Sunday atop Monte Sano Mountain? Monte Sano United Methodist Church has carried on this tradition for years.

Easter Sunrise Service at Southwood Presbyterian Church
Here’s another sunrise service for Easter Sunday. This one is at the beautiful Southwood Presbyterian Church in Huntsville. There is certainly something special about celebrating Easter at sunrise.

Mass at Monte Sano
Even earlier than the services hosted by Monte Sano UMC will the the Easter morning Sunrise Mass hosted by St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, also at Monte Sano State Park. The Mass will be at the park’s overlook, which is near the small pavilion. It is open to all who would like to attend.
