5 ways to honor MLK this coming week in Huntsville

Monday, Jan. 15 is a national holiday celebrating the life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and there are multiple ways to honor MLK this weekend in the Huntsville area.

Whether you want to do something low key or in a crowd, there’s an MLK outing for you:

1. Compassionate Huntsville’s MLK Day Celebration

Celebrate the life of Dr. King at the Dr. MLK, Jr. Day 2024 Celebration at NASA highlighting the theme: “It Starts with Me.” Speakers include Dr. Darrell Ezell, Jacqui Shipe and Dr. Bryan Samuel.

2. 2024 Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Commemoration Program

This year’s theme is based on Martin Luther King Jr.’s quote, “In the end, we will remember not the words of our enemies, but the silence of our friends.” The keynote speaker will be Birmingham native Lisa McNair, who has an amazing story to tell.

3. MLK Celebration Parade

The Huntsville Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity has put together an MLK Day celebration with a parade in downtown Huntsville, with Dr. Toni Terrell serving as the Grand Marshal.

4. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday Celebration 2024 (Athens)

The annual Athens-Limestone Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday Celebration this year will include a unity march and program on Jan. 15. Also, students who won in the essay and art categories will receive their awards at the program.

5. Decatur Minority Development Association MLK Scholarship event

Don’t miss the 31st annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Scholarship Award Breakfast hosted by the Decatur Morgan County Minority Development Association. If you cannot be there in person, you can tune in on WAFF.
