Reading time: 2 minutes

The Alabama State Board of Education this week recognized more than 50 public schools in the state for a variety of achievements, including what might have been Blue Ribbon School of Excellence awards.
2 Huntsville-area elementary schools—Monte Sano Elementary and Heritage Elementary—were named 2025 Blue Ribbon Schools finalists, but because the U.S. Department of Education has discontinued the award, the schools will just have to be happy being nominated.
Five Alabama schools were among those nominated, including:
- Lakewood Elementary School — Phenix City Schools
- Shades Mountain Elementary — Hoover City Schools
- Kilby Laboratory School — Florence City Schools
- Monte Sano Elementary School — Huntsville City Schools
- Heritage Elementary School — Madison City Schools
