Are you searching for a new furry friend for this Christmas season?

As you may know, the holidays are a prime adopting season. Luckily, the Huntsville area is home to many shelters with adorable and friendly cats and dogs just waiting to find their forever homes.

With the recent spike of animals in shelters in our city and across the country, be sure to visit any of these five Huntsville shelters for your new best friend:

A New Leash on Life Adoption Center

You can continue giving this holiday season by helping shelters maintain their supply stocks for rescue animals. (A New Leash on Life / Instagram)

A New Leash on Life not only contains an adoption center but also offers pet supplies in its thrift boutique right next door. The thrift boutique is operated exclusively by volunteers and funds help support the shelter’s mission.

This center also has free-roaming kitten rooms and hosts weekly adoption events at pet supply stores throughout Huntsville.

Ark Inc.

Be sure to visit The Ark as you search for the newest member of your family this Christmas. (Ryleigh Scott / Hville Blast)

The Ark Inc. is a no-kill shelter that works hard to give pets the best chance to find a new family.

Here is the shelter’s slogan: “Saving the life of one animal may not change the world, but it surely changes the world for that one animal.”

With their committed volunteer staff, creative pet descriptions and recent renovation endeavors, the Ark Inc. is a fantastic adoption destination.

Cattyshack, Inc.

Cattyshack is hosting an online silent auction this week to help raise funds for its rescue kitties. (Cattyshack, Inc. / Facebook)

Cattyshack is a bit different from the rest of the places on our list, namely because it operates as a lounge for rescue cats to socialize before they find their new owner.

Located in Lowe Mill, Cattyshack provides a fun way for visitors to do some good even if adoption is not the end goal. All reservation funds go toward veterinary care and paying for food, litter and medications.

Greater Huntsville Humane Society

The Greater Huntsville Humane Society is another shelter that rescues and provides care to homeless and unwanted animals as they await adoption.

The shelter thrives off of donations, volunteers and fosters willing to help animals find the home of their dreams.

Like A New Leash on Life, this shelter also has an adjacent thrift store that helps fund animal care.

Huntsville Animal Shelter

Rounding out our list is the Huntsville Animal Shelter, which provides a seamless adoption process and top-notch care for all of its residents.

From time to time, the shelter will also have low to no-cost fees to help decrease shelter crowding.

  • Where: 4950 Triana Blvd SW, Huntsville, AL 35805
  • Hours: Monday and Wednesday-Friday, 9AM-5PM; Tuesday, 9AM-6PM; Saturday, 9AM-3PM

As you’re looking for the newest member of your family this Christmas, be sure to keep these adoption locations in mind. Not only can you find the perfect pet, but you can also help more rescues get the care they deserve and reduce overcrowding in shelters across the city.
