Athens, AL to serve as backdrop in new Christmas movie
Reading time: 2 minutes

If you’ve recently spotted some Christmas decor around downtown Athens, we promise you haven’t totally lost track of time. Our not-so-small town is actually stepping into the spotlight as the filming location for a family holiday film, ‘Kangaroo Christmas!’
Here’s what the lead producer of this project has to say about why they chose city:
“What made Athens so appealing was the look and feel of it. We really fell in love with it. You only want to go where you are wanted, and everyone here has been so welcoming and so cooperative, it was truthfully a no brainer.”
Lead Producer, Branscombe Richmond
About the film

‘Kangaroo Christmas’ tells the heartwarming tale of Joey, a young kangaroo who escapes from the zoo and finds himself in the care of two children whose family has lost its holiday spirit after a great tragedy. As the family embarks on a journey to reunite Joey with its mother, they’re reminded of the true meaning of love during the holiday season.
“It’s children and animals during Christmas, it doesn’t get much better than that.”
Lead Producer, Branscombe Richmond

Some of Athens’ most iconic spots have served as backdrops for the film, such as the Limestone County Courthouse and Alabama Veterans Museum. Production wrapped up on October 11 at the Athens Farmers Market.
To add an extra touch of hometown pride, this film gave locals the opportunity to debut their acting careers. Athens Mayor Ronnie Marks made a special appearance in the movie, with several more locals starring as extras.
