Athens chooses “Five Points” as name for new downtown district

Athens has designated “Five Points” as the official name for its newest downtown district, with a hand-painted mural created by local artist Adam Stephenson serving as a centerpiece for the area.

Located at the intersection of South Madison Street and West Green Street, this area has been unofficially known to locals as Five Points for some time now and features the Athens Farmers Market along with other local businesses like Baw Baw’s BBQ and Iron & Ales.

The area’s rebranding is being spearheaded by Athens Main Street, a nonprofit organization with close ties to the City of Athens. The ultimate goal is to give the area a distinct identity within downtown Athens, and creating a place that attracts both businesses and people.

In addition to the mural, city leaders announced that decorative banners will soon be added to the area, which will further establish Five Points as a distinct district and add to its visual appeal.
