Athens State president gets new 3-year contract extension

Athens State University has extended the contract of its president, Dr. Catherine Wehlburg, by three years. The new extension means Dr. Wehlburg will remain president of the school through May 1, 2030.

The Board of Trustees approved the extension during its July 17 meeting, following the completion of its performance evaluation of Dr. Wehlburg.

Wehlburg assumed the role of president at Athens State in 2024, and in that time, she has overseen multiple advancements at the school:

• Construction of the Nazaretian Alumni Welcome Center
• Renovation of Brown Hall
• Renovation of the Carter Center
• Launch of the Career Advantage initiative

Before assuming the role as president, Wehlberg most recently served as provost and vice president for Academic Affairs at Athens State. She has spent more than 30 years in education—as a professor, department chair, associate dean, dean, associate provost and provost.

She holds multiple higher education degrees, including:

• Ph.D. in Educational Psychology, University of Florida
• M.Ed. in Educational Psychology, University of Florida
• B.S. in Psychology, University of Florida
