Athens was chosen as an official America250 city

Athens is getting ready to celebrate a big moment in American history this Independence Day.
The Alabama USA Semiquincentennial Commission (America250AL) and American Village have officially named Athens one of Alabama’s America250 cities, recognizing the community’s role in celebrating the 250th anniversary of the United States in 2026.
Athens is considered one of the oldest cities in Alabama, with ties dating back to the post–Revolutionary War era.

Celebrations already planned

A local Athens-America250AL committee made up of community leaders, educators, historians and volunteers is planning several events leading up to the celebration.
Here are a few Independence Day weekend highlights already in the works:
July 3 activities:
- 🖼️ Art After Hours on Marion Street from 7–9PM
- 🎶 Live music from JED-Eye
- 💃 Performances by the Rocket City Starlets
- 🇺🇸 Patriotic crafts for kids
July 4 activities:
- 🏃♂️ Inaugural Red, White, and Boom 5K run
- 🎆 Red, White, and Boom festival at the Sportsplex
- Live music
- Food trucks
- Local vendors
- Fireworks
🎨 Student art contest
The Athens Arts League will host a “My American Inspiration” art contest for local students, with entries displayed around the city and winners announced during the July celebration.
Entries will be accepted April–May 2026 and displayed at:
- Athens-Limestone Tourism
- City Hall
- Scout House
- Athens State University
Winners will receive cash prizes and special America250 certificates, announced during the Red, White, and Boom festival.
📚 Special program at Athens State
Athens State University is planning an educational program titled “John Adams: Architect of Our Democracy”.
- 🗓️ July 7, 2026
- 🇺🇸 The program will explore the life and legacy of the second U.S. president.
Honoring local history

Organizers are also exploring plans for a monument honoring John Wade Keyes, believed to be Alabama’s first veteran, who is buried in the Athens City Cemetery.
As an official America250 city, Athens will join communities across the country to promote events that attract both residents and visitors in celebrating the nation’s 250th birthday.
