Band director retires after 13 years at Alabama A&M University

The beloved Carlton J. Wright served as director of bands at Alabama A&M for the last 13 years and is now set to retire in June 2026.
Wright’s work as director led the band to many achievements and national events, signifying the culmination of an illustrious career in leadership and music teaching.
Where it all began

Wright is a Montgomery native attending Montgomery County Schools and is a graduate of G.W. Carter High School. From there, he joined the United States Army Reserve and was commissioned as a second lieutenant. The former Captain Wright proudly served in various positions until his honorable discharge.
Additionally, Wright is an alumnus of Alabama A&M University, where he earned his bachelor’s degree in music education in 1986. Wright then went on to earn his master’s degree from Hampton University in music education.
He returned to AAMU in May of 2013 as Director of Bands, leading 7 bands during his tenure.

Wrights impact on AAMU

Director Carl J. Wright was an instructor and mentor who guided the bands to numerous accomplishments locally and nationally.
Mr.Wright was not just a band director; he wasn’t just an instructor; he was a father figure to many. A lot of band members look up to him, not just because he’s good at what he does, but because he was always there when nobody else was.
