U.S. News released its 2027 Best Colleges list — where do our local universities rank?

U.S. News has been releasing annual rankings of the top universities and colleges in the United States since the early 80s.
These lists go into incredible depth, and can be divided into tons of different sub categories — including liberal arts colleges, regional rankings and more.
Two of our local programs, the University of Alabama in Huntsville (UAH) and the University of North Alabama (UNA), finished with respectable rankings on two of U.S. News’ 2027 lists: The Best Colleges in Alabama and Best Regional Universities South Rankings.

The University of North Alabama ranks regionally
UNA ranked #43 in the South Region, placing it between Morehead State University (#42) and Christian Brothers University (#44). The South Region includes 158 schools from 11 different states.
According to U.S. News, schools only qualify for regional rankings when they offer a broad scope of undergraduate majors and some master’s programs, but little in the way of research-oriented doctoral programs.
That means major schools like Alabama, Auburn and even UAH, don’t qualify for the list.
The University of Alabama in Huntsville ranks top 5 in Alabama
UAH may not have qualified to rank regionally, but it still finished as the fifth-best university in Alabama according to U.S. News.
That puts it above other schools like the University of South Alabama, Troy University and Alabama State University. UAH was the only local college to finish top 5 in Alabama.
