City of Huntsville gives update on Big Spring Park expansion

The City of Huntsville has released an update regarding the major expansion project at Big Spring Park.

Construction on the east side of the park at the site of the former City Hall began earlier this year with crews preparing the site, installing infrastructure and laying the groundwork for the park’s new features.

What’s the latest on Big Spring park expansion?

The entire construction project will include a range of amenities designed to encourage recreation, connectivity and community gathering, including:

• Pavilion with an integrated water feature
• Public restrooms
• Rustic-themed playground
• Accessible walking paths throughout the site
• Public art installations in partnership with ArtsHuntsville
• Church Street streetscape improvements, including pedestrian enhancements
• Repairs to the canal wall to improve long-term stability and safety

So how far along are we?

City officials said progress on the pavilion and some of its structural steel elements is becoming more visible, giving visitors a clearer sense of the building that will anchor the east side of the park.

“Much of the work we’ve seen so far has been horizontal, so it can be difficult to see just how much progress is being made. Now we’re getting to the point where we can start going vertical on the buildings and that’s when people will really begin to see the project take shape.”

City officials also said as construction continues, adding the pavilion’s timber frame, the developing plaza levels, progress on Church Street and the future art installations will offer “increasingly visible signs of what is to come.”

The project is slated for completion in spring 2027.
