Black History Month in the Rocket City: Some events to check out

As we start to close out January, we set our sights to Black History Month–celebrating the culture and contributions of Black Americans to our country’s history–and if you are wondering how you can celebrate in Huntsville, we have some great options for you.
Take a look:
Melaninated Marvels @ Cavalry Hill Public Library

- What: This is a discussion-based program highlighting influential Black voices in history, literature and the arts. Participants will engage with short readings, video clips, and conversation prompts that celebrate resilience, creativity and community impact.
- When: Every Monday in February, 4PM

Voices of Hope + Power @ Cavalry Hill Community Center

- What: Now in its second year, the event will bring together powerful vocal performances from Oakwood University’s Dynamic Praise choir as well as choirs from Alabama A&M University, Lee High School and Jemison High School.

‘Joy Without Consent’ @MidCity

- What: This art exhibit features works from artists “showing what it looks like to live, rest, laugh, love, build, remain and be, even inside systems that were never designed for our ease.”

‘An Inspiring Conversation‘ @ Huntsville Museum of Art

- What: Moderated by acclaimed scholar, author and curator Dr. Bridget R. Cooks, this dynamic conversation explores identity, creativity, and cultural resonance in conjunction with the exhibition Alicia Henry + Fahamu Pecou.
- When: Thursday, Feb. 13, 5PM

- What: Explore films that celebrate the courage, contributions and history of prominent figures in the Black community.

- What: Bring your friends and your knowledge of Black History, compete to win prizes and perhaps learn something new.
