NEW: Brahan Spring Park disc golf course to be renamed
Reading time: 3 minutes
Brahan Spring Park is a historical piece of land not just in Huntsville, but in the world of disc golf as well.
The disc golf course at Brahan Spring Park is the 7th oldest in the world, installed in 1976, and the site of the 1983 and 1993 Disc Golf World Championships, and is being renamed to honor the late Huntsville native, original designer and disc golf legend, Tom Monroe.
Tom Monroe: “the Johnny Appleseed of disc golf”
Tom Monroe is one of the earliest and most influential players in the sport of disc golf.
Not only did he design courses, including the one at Brahan Spring Park, but he was also an accomplished athlete worldwide in disc golf, winning the Disc Golf World Championship 19 times. Monroe was part of the inaugural induction into the World Disc Golf Hall of Fame in 1993, and named by the Pro Disc Gold Association the “Johnny Appleseed of disc golf” for his years as an ambassador of the sport.
“Tom is the single most influential person in the history and development and progression of our sport. On the course, even in the heat of battle and world championship competition, he would play to the crowd, trying to make people laugh or smile. He would take risky shots just because. And that that meant more to him than actually winning.”
Lavone Wolfe, Huntsville native and close friend of Monroe who was inducted into the World Disc Golf Hall of Fame in 1994.
Monroe passed earlier this month at the age of 77. His friends and family are working to get a statue commemorating his life and achievements installed at the park which now bears his name.
The Tom Monroe Disc Golf Course at Brahan Spring Park
The park has been a long-time local favorite of disc golf players (including myself) and regularly hosts tournaments and events.
In addition to being well maintained, the course layout and length make it inviting for new players as well as veterans of the sport.
The course is located next to Milton Frank Stadium between Bob Wallace and Drake Avenue and you can find more course details and event information on the course’s official UDisc page.
