BREAKING: Huntsville Hospital to purchase Crestwood Medical Center
Reading time: 3 minutes

In a major announcement for the Huntsville medical infrastructure, Huntsville Hospital Foundation has agreed to purchase Crestwood Medical Center, joining the two major hospitals in the Huntsville area.
The acquisition is expected to close in the first quarter of 2026, subject to customary closing requirements.
Here’s what to know about the Crestwood acquisition

The $450 million purchase by the Huntsville Hospital System continues the organization’s growth, which has seen a 16% increase over the last five years.
Crestwood Medical Center will continue normal operations through the completion of the acquisition, with no immediate changes to patient care, medical staff privileges or services.
The purchase price is $450 million and the acquisition includes the Medical Center, the Crestwood free-standing emergency department in Harvest, and other associated assets, including outpatient services and clinics and certain ambulatory interests.
The acquisition is expected to close in the first quarter of 2026, subject to customary closing requirements.
“As our community continues to grow, we listen carefully to patient experiences and expectations. Our community wants and deserves options for more locally coordinated services and care. Acquiring Crestwood allows us to coordinate and align healthcare resources across the community.”
Jeff Samz, President and CEO of Huntsville Hospital Health System
Justin Serrano, CEO of Crestwood Medical Center, said the transaction “is a great opportunity for our patients and the community.”
What this means moving forward
As Huntsville has continued to grow at a rapid pace, the city’s healthcare infrastructure has been strained to its limits in recent years. This acquisition, according to hospital officials, addresses that issue in part.
Officials said the entities “will be better positioned to manage patient capacity and improve access to care, especially in high-demand areas, such as emergency and maternity services.”
The acquisition also means that medical record-keeping systems are unified, which will help patients of both hospital systems.
“We envision opportunities to better coordinate community EMS resources, develop a single regional electronic medical record system for continuity of care and patient convenience, strengthen clinical service lines, expand clinician and workforce development and training and enhance community partnerships.”

So, what happens to future plans for each of these healthcare entities?
All previously announced and planned capital projects will continue, according to hospital officials. This includes:
- The $150 million bed tower expansion underway at HH Health’s Madison Street hospital
- Two new free-standing emergency departments planned in Madison County
- Expansion of the Madison Hospital emergency department and imaging center
- New operating rooms at Athens-Limestone Hospital.
Additionally, previously announced compensation adjustments for HH Health employees remain underway, as well as customary merit pay increases.
