Reading time: 2 minutes

One small step for Space Command, one giant step for Huntsville.
There have been whispers throughout North Alabama for over a year since it was announced that Huntsville was a potential location for Space Command’s headquarters. After a Congressional back-and-forth over placing the agency permanently in Colorado Springs or Huntsville, we may have our answer.
In a recent interview, Representative and Chairman of the House Armed Services Committee Mike Rogers stated that Space Command’s move to Huntsville may be more imminent than we thought.
What we know

Rogers stated that the move will begin as soon as the Air Force Secretary is confirmed. From this point on, the duties of the Secretary will extend over to the Space Force agency as well.
“I expect sometime during the month of April that Space Command will officially be assigned to build its headquarters in Huntsville… contractors are ready to turn dirt.”

At the current moment, President Trump has nominated Troy Meink to be named as Air Force Secretary. Meink has been director of the National Reconnaissance Office since October 2020.
What does this mean for Huntsville?

The ultimate goal in moving Space Command to Huntsville is to work towards implementing the Trump Administration’s idea of a “Golden Dome” — a space-based missile defense system focused on proactivity towards possible attacks.
The placement of Space Command in Huntsville is projected to bring at least 1,600 new jobs to the area, which is no small feat.
Space Command being located in Huntsville would place the Rocket City on the map even further as a landmark of space technology.
