Celebrate National Tequila Day with these 4 amazing drinks

Celebrate National Tequila Day
Have you ever tried a watermelon sour patch kid and thought, I want to drink that? (Joey Luria / Hville Blast)

This week I visited BarVista for National Tequila Day in downtown Huntsville to ask for recommendations on tequila drinks that were not margaritas. Their friendly staff crafted four insanely good drinks for me that were very unique from each other, and made me appreciate tequila’s versatility in taste.

Read about these drinks, recipes and tasting notes below.

Cocktails to try for National Tequila Day

Tequila Old Fashioned

Everyone knows the Old Fashioned, traditionally made with American bourbon. If you consider yourself a fan, observe National Tequila Day by switching the bourbon out with tequila for a different, yet just as complex tasting profile.

I found that the Tequila Old Fashioned had a nice, smooth and peppery taste that lingered with the addition of bitters that balanced well with simple syrup. I would recommend this drink for fans of bold flavors and black coffee, especially if you’ve never had Resposado tequila before.

Insider tip: ask for chocolate bitters in this one.

Tequila Sunrise

Tequila Sunrise is now my favorite tequila drink. (Joey Luria / Hville Blast)

This one was my personal favorite. Made with Jose silver and fruit juice topped off with grenadine and lemon lime soda, the tequila sunrise is great for those who don’t particularly enjoy the taste of nail poli… I mean alcohol.

The fruit juices blended beautifully with the bite of the silver tequila, and the addition of grenadine and lemon lime soda gave it a delightfully light taste that reminded me of punch.

Paloma

The Paloma is perhaps the second most ordered tequila drink besides the margarita. A mix of silver tequila, lime juice, grapefruit juice and Prosecco white wine, the Paloma is a classic for a reason.

It tastes like you’re branching out at a formal dress party, starting out the night with a recommendation your best friend since 8th grade gave you. I found it a nice, sparkly + citrusy blend that mixed beautifully with the dry sour of the Prosecco.

Watermelon Patch

Even though I already had three other drinks in front of me, I didn’t want to put this one down. (Joey Luria / Hville Blast)

Ok, you’re going to want to sit down for this one. The bartender at BarVista custom made this one a few years ago, and kept it in his back pocket for those looking for a flipping-good sour tequila drink surprise.

The Watermelon Patch consists of silver tequila, peach schnapps, watermelon pucker and triple sec with lime, pineapple + orange juice all topped with lemon-lime soda.

No joke, this tasted exactly like a boozy watermelon sour patch kid.

You’re better off writing the ingredients on a slip of paper and handing it to your bartender instead of trying to shout the recipe over Dua Lipa blaring in the background. Either way, you won’t regret it.

National holidays like this are a great way to branch out and try things you’ve never thought of before. But it should go without saying, drink responsibly and order the one that sounds tastiest to you.

If you went through this list and instead just want a classic marg, it’s okay; I accept your apology. Check out our list on where to find the best margarita in Huntsville for National Tequila Day.
