Juneteenth, celebrated June 19, recognizes the end of slavery in the United States and is now a national holiday. Also referred to as Emancipation Day or Juneteenth Independence Day, it became an official federal holiday in 2021.

In the Huntsville area, you have plenty of opportunities to celebrate the holiday at a bevy of different events.

Black Restaurant Week

  • What: This 10-day celebration supports every restaurant, chef, vendor and owner of anything connected to feeding the Rocket City. The year’s highlighted event will be the Rocket City Rodeo Southern Soul and R&B Festival, which features live music, food trucks and vendors

Annual Juneteenth Festival

  • What: Throughout the park, festival-goers can explore booths from local nonprofits, community groups and organizations offering valuable resources and services. Get some food from multiple food trucks as a DJ spins tunes between live stage performances. The night will conclude with a fireworks display.
