City of Athens + Athens City Schools seek new funds for capital improvements

The City of Athens and the Athens City Schools Board of Education have each requested funds for capital improvements.
The Athens City Council approved seeking these funds through general obligation warrants, with the aggregate principal amount not expected to exceed $45 million.

What will the funds be used for?
The City of Athens proposes to use its portion to fund various capital improvements, including public parks and recreation.
The Athens City Board of Education has requested funds for capital improvements to schoolhouses—including a new 46,500-square-foot adaptable-use facility at Athens Renaissance School.
The board would be responsible for its funding portion and its capital projects.
A general obligation warrant is a legal debt pledge where local governments commit tax revenues to repay principal and interest. Cities like Huntsville and Athens routinely issue these Series 2026 warrants to finance public infrastructure, schools and park improvements.
