The Alabama Dept. of Economic and Community Affairs notified the City of Athens this week that it is recommending the city’s Swan Creek Park grant project to the National Park Service.
The NPS will now review it and make a determination on whether the project will be funded.
About the Swan Creek Park project

The changes involved in the project include:
- Re-purposing the previously unused field into a “Make a Way” field, which would create space for special needs children and adults.
- Improved pickleball facilities
- Paving the walking track that connects to Swan Creek Greenway
- Renovated pavilions
- A new entrance
- ADA sidewalk
The City of Athens applied for a $1 million grant to help fund the first phase of renovations at Swan Creek. The Make A Way Foundation is partnering with the city on the inclusive ball field portion of the proposal. The project is expected to cost around $4 million.
