Curbside recycling services suspended in Athens for now
Reading time: 1 minute

The City of Athens announced over the weekend that its curbside recycling services will be suspended until further notice. The announcement comes after the City of Decatur (who handles the recycling for Athens) reported equipment failure issues earlier in the week.
City of Athens Sanitation Superintendent Terence Brown said that after Decatur reported the suspension he reached out to the City of Florence, but Florence cannot currently accept recyclable materials from Athens.
Brown said residents can set out the recycling bin for trash pickup, if needed. Residents can also check with Limestone County Recycling Center on North Jefferson Street to see if it is able to accept drop-off recycling.
The City of Athens will provide updates on curbside recycling service as information becomes available.
Brown said recycling is not charged on the sanitation bill, but is a service that has been provided to not only promote recycling but to help save on the cost of landfill tipping fees.
