Decatur City Council approves new volleyball courts + streetlight improvements

The Decatur City Council’s meeting Monday, September 21, included the approval of improved street lighting and two new sand volleyball courts, among other measures.

Every item requiring a vote passed 5-0.

Improved lighting, new volleyball courts in Decatur

The City Council approved $41,005 for downtown streetlight improvements after Decatur Utilities identified five areas where the city could make upgrades. The council selected two areas to begin the work.

The project will restore 45 decorative lights along Bank Street and address the lighting poles along the Gordon Drive overpass. The work will include painting poles, cleaning fixtures and completing other needed improvements.

The city will fund the project with money from the General Fund unassigned balance.

In addition to streetlight improvements, the council also approved a lease with Morgan County for property along Lee Street to build two sand volleyball courts.

The lease costs $10 per year and begins with an 18-month term. The Tennessee Valley Authority is providing $16,000 for the sand and the city will use the General Fund unassigned balance for other necessary costs.

Additional measures approved by the Decatur City Council this week include:

Improvements to the alley behind the CCI Cancer Center on Sixth Avenue
Traffic and transportation support related to the proposed intermodal facility
An updated school resource officer agreement between the Decatur Police Department and Decatur City Schools
Changes to disposal and processing charges at the landfill and recycling facility
Accepting a $5,000 donation from Air Products for Decatur Fire and Rescue equipment or supplies
Awarding the City’s temporary staffing services contract to Vervic Human Capital Solutions
The transfer of certain tourism-related event contracts to the City’s Parks and Recreation Department
Declaring two Recycling Department vehicles as surplus property
Demolition-cost assessments totaling $12,660 against two properties
18 weed-abatement assessments totaling $7,159
A Class 2 lounge retail liquor license for Star Spirits & Beverages at 903 Sixth Ave. NE
An Oct. 19 public hearing concerning unsafe conditions at 1820 Fifth Ave. SW
