Demand for power set an all-time record this morning, according to the Tennessee Valley Authority.

The peak demand came when temperatures across the region averaged around 4 degrees.

What was the previous record + when was it set?

The previous record for power demand was set on Aug. 16, 2007 when residents used 33,482 megawatts (MW) of power. Huntsville reached a temperature of 105 degrees that day, and it was the hottest day of 2007.

The new record set this morning was for 34,526 MW.

At this time, TVA reports the electric grid is stable.

Still, TVA urges customers to conserve energy by turning thermostats down, opening blinds and curtains to let sunlight in and seal cracks in doors and windows.

Temperatures will continue to remain low through the weekend, but Huntsville’s seen lower temperatures before.
