Wednesday was Early Signing Day for the current college football recruiting cycle, and that means student-athletes all over the country made known which uniforms they will dob on the gridiron next year.

Locally, eight high school football stars from this part of the state committed to college football rosters for the next season. Here’s who they are and where they’re going:

Early Signing Day means that student-athletes can sign official letters of intent to play football at their chosen school. This has become a trend among many high school players — signing early rather than waiting until the traditional National Signing Day in February — as recruiting has become a big media frenzy.

Of the eight who committed Wednesday, seven chose to remain in the state of Alabama, with Athens High School receiver Jayshon Ridgle committing to the University of Houston.

Here’s who signed Wednesday:

  • Nick Crayton — wide receiver, Austin HS, committed to Samford
  • Myles Cook — defensive end, Bob Jones HS, committed to UAB
  • Jalen Fletcher – running back, West MorganHS, committed to University of North Alabama
  • Alex Moore — tight end, Huntsville High, committed to Jacksonville State
  • Jayshon Ridgle – wide receiver,  Athens HS, committed to University of Houston
  • Brandon White — defensive end, Bob Jones HS, committed to Alabama A&M
  • Achilles Woods — linebacker, Austin HS, committed to South Alabama
  • Marc Woods Jr. — defensive back, James Clemens HS, committed to Jacksonville State

While the University of Alabama is no stranger to elite recruiting classes in recent years, Auburn has not been among the top teams in the recruiting races of the last several years.

That’s why Hugh Freeze was such a significant hire for the Tigers. Freeze is known for his recruiting prowess and he’s shown that during this cycle, as Auburn finished Early Signing Day with the 8th best class in the country.

Alabama continued its dominance on the recruiting trail, with the no. 2 ranked recruiting class.

Check out the rundown of all of Alabama and Auburn’s early signees on the Bama Buzz.
