HSV.py (Python Meetup) Talks & Social (w/ Pizza!)

August 6 @ 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm

Free

We’ll be meeting at Athens State University for some talks and a social night (pizza included!). Please register on our Meetup (its free!) so we have accurate headcount: https://www.meetup.com/hsv-py/events/302294339/

We’ll be featuring at least two speakers this session (let us know if you’d like to speak for 15 minutes).

Beginning in Open Source Packaging in 2024
Fame, Fortune, and fixing your own problems are common reasons to start an open source project. What does Open Source mean in 2024 – who makes open source contributions today, and why the future of open source needs you! Phebe Polk will discuss the answers to these questions in this talk.

Phebe Polk is a Senior Software Engineer at Guardant Health, a cancer diagnostic biotech startup. She creates tools for her coworkers which are stored in the private python packaging repository. She is also the treasurer of Bay Area Python Association, and she helps run PyBay – the longest running west coast python conference, and is an organizer for San Francisco Python Meetups – a monthly meetup for Python developers in San Francisco.

What’s New (and What’s Coming) in Python!
C.A.M. Gerlach will be taking a look at the new features released in Python 3.12 and those coming in Python 3.13, as well as a sneak peak at the team’s plans for future versions.

After getting his start as a NASA-funded researcher at UAH specializing in atmospheric science, satellite meteorology and machine learning using open data, CAM found his true passion in contributing to the global Python community. He has been a core developer of the Spyder IDE since 2018 and of Python itself since 2023, as well as a Python PEP Editor and Docs Team member, with an overall focus on documentation, packaging, UI/UX, workflow and outreach. CAM helps maintain a number of other FOSS packages, as well as helps run the Star Fleet Tours collective, which organizes boat trips for rocket launch viewing at Cape Canaveral and Starbase, Texas.

Managing Python Projects with Poetry
Ashley Hunt will be talking about the Python Tool Poetry.

We hope to see you there, and as always, we are always looking to get new venues and speakers, so contact the organizers if you’re interested.
