Taj Mahal at The Princess Theatre

Towering music legend Taj Mahal to Perform at The Princess Theatre

Decatur, AL — The Princess Theatre is proud to announce that the iconic Taj Mahal will take the stage on Monday, April 20, 2026.

Taj Mahal is a towering musical figure — a legend who has never abandoned the blues, but instead revealed its vastness, beauty, and global roots. Over more than six decades of touring, recording, collaborating, and exploring, Taj has helped the world understand that blues music is not a stagnant genre, but a living, breathing tradition with tendrils reaching into rock, gospel, folk, Caribbean rhythms, African traditions, and beyond.

A brilliant artist with a musicologist’s mind, Taj has spent his life pursuing and elevating the roots of beloved sounds with devotion and unmatched skill. As he traced those musical origins — across the American South, the Caribbean, West Africa, and countless places in between — he created entirely new sounds, over and over again. His influence spans generations: he is revered by rock-and-roll greats like Eric Clapton and The Rolling Stones, and he is a hero to boundary-breaking artists who combine genres people once believed didn’t belong together.

Born in Harlem in 1942 to musical parents — a jazz pianist father with Caribbean roots and a gospel-singing schoolteacher mother from South Carolina — Taj grew up in a home where personal history, culture, and the arts were all part of daily life. Over the years he has become a multi-instrumental marvel, proficient on roughly twenty instruments and counting.

His impact continues to grow. His 2022 Grammy win for Get On Board with Ry Cooder, followed by another Grammy for Swingin’ Live at the Church Studio in Tulsa with his Sextet, brought his Grammy tally to five wins and sixteen nominations. He is a member of the Blues Hall of Fame, has received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Americana Music Association, and is a 2025 Recording Academy Lifetime Achievement Award Honoree.

More than fifty years after his solo debut, Taj Mahal remains profoundly relevant — still innovating, still surprising, still teaching the world that the blues is a universe.

Presale to The Princess Theatre members will begin November 12th. Public tickets will go on sale November 14th. Day of show, doors will open at 6:00 p.m. with performance beginning at 7:00 p.m.
