Former legislator Howard Sanderford dies at age 90

Longtime member of the Alabama State Legislature Howard Sanderford passed away yesterday at the age of 90. A Huntsville resident, he represented District 20 in the Alabama House of Representatives from 1989 to 2022.
Howard Sanderford remembered as a ‘devoted public servant’

A United States Marine veteran, Sanderford played many roles in public service in addition to his time in the Alabama House of Representatives.
He also served in these capacities:
- Alabama Board of Medical Scholarship Awards
- Alabama Commission on Aerospace Sciences
- Alabama Management Improvement Program
- Huntsville Rotary Club
- Metropolitan Young Men’s Christian Association Board
- U.S. Space & Rocket Center Commission
Mayor Tommy Battle said Sanderford was a “devoted public servant.”
Howard devoted many years of his life to public service, and his commitment to the people of Alabama reflected a deep sense of responsibility and care for his community. Throughout his career, he was known as a thoughtful and principled leader who worked to make a positive difference through his service in the Legislature.
“His contributions to our state will be remembered, and his legacy of service will endure. On behalf of the City of Huntsville, I extend my deepest condolences to Mr. Sanderford’s family, friends, and all those who had the privilege of working with him. Our thoughts and prayers are with them during this difficult time.”
