The Tollgate Greenway project — a project for which the Land Trust of North Alabama has been raising funds for the last year — has just a few months left of fundraising and more funds are still needed to make the plan a reality.

The Land Trust says the greenway project is still short of its $500,000 goal. Here’s more info:

According to the Land Trust of North Alabama, $350,000 is still needed for the project, and they must raise those funds by August 2024 to begin the project.

The proposed route follows the existing Tollgate Trail, specifically selected for the project because of its already wide corridor, to minimize disruption to the surrounding area. The project aims to:

  • Expand outdoor access for hikers, walkers, cyclists, and those with mobility limitations
  • Provide cyclists a safe route on the mountain
  • Improve off-road parking for safer traffic flow
  • Create education opportunities that highlight the history and ecology of the area
  • Establish a seamless, paved connection from Bankhead Trailhead to Monte Sano State Park

Fundraising goals

The City of Huntsville has agreed to match $500,000 for the project is the Land Trust can raise that much by August of 2024.

The Land Trust of North Alabama is asking the public to help match the city’s pledge so that the Tollgate Greenway can become a reality. To donate, visit the Land Trust’s website donation page.
